MARE OF EASTTOWN S01E02 (REVIEW)

Mare of Easttown S01E02

Mare of Easttown S01E02 is the second episode of an American crime drama miniseries created by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel. The miniseries stars Kate Winslet (as main character Detective Mare Sheehan) and is set in the fictional township of Easttown.

Entitled “Fathers”, Mare of Easttown S01E02 picks up where the pilot episode left off with the discovery of a dead body at a grisly murder scene. As the episode develops, more information is revealed to the audience and we get a better sense of our main character (Mare Sheehan) and the little town dynamic that defines Easttown.

A new character is introduced viz. Detective Colin Zabel (played by Evan Peters) – note that the director’s surname is Zobel (!) – which stirs up the pot as far as Mare is concerned. Zabel’s very presence a reminder of how Mare has failed to solve a cold case – Katie Bailey – a local girl who disappeared a year ago. Peters does not get to do much with Zabel but the character does act as a foil to Mare’s unlikable personality.

Now, Kate Winslet is recognised as one of the finest actors of her generation. But Mare Sheehan comes across as a hardcore bitch in the first two episodes but – fortunately – as more is revealed about Mare’s circumstances, the audience is able to understand her situation and emphatize with the way she behaves. That all said, Winslet has basically had to look pissed off and angry for most of the series so far and it’s not a good look.

Considering the shocking revelations that come at the end of the episode, we can expect Mare’s mood to get even worse – if that is at all possible. Certainly, Mare’s life is going to get even more complicated which makes Mare of Easttown S01E02 an intriguing piece of the puzzle that hopefully will pay dividends when the big picture is complete.
