LOWER DECKS SEASON 4 EP 7 (ANALYSIS)

Lower Decks Season 4 Ep 7 is the seventh chapter of the fourth season of an American adult animated science fiction television series created by Mike McMahan for the streaming service CBS All Access (later rebranded as Paramount+). It is the ninth Star Trek series and debuted in 2020 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe. The franchise’s first animated series since Star Trek: The Animated Series concluded in 1974 and also its first comedy, Lower Decks follows the low-ranking support crew of the starship Cerritos in the 24th century.

Premise
Entitled “A Few Badgeys More” Lower Decks Season 4 Ep 7 has three computerized villains returning to cause problems for the Cerritos crew.” First up, Rutherford’s hologram Badgey – thought destroyed previously – is revived which leaves Rutherford, Mariner and the Cerritos in grave danger. Elsewhere, Boimler investigates AGIMUS and Tendi deals with Peanut Hamper’s parole hearing.

Good
These three evil A.I. characters have been wonderfully brought back to serve as excellent antagonists this episode. Of course, this scifi trope is quite common but the episode managed to avoid most of the cliches to deliver an entertaining chapter. The logic behind Badgey’s ultimate capitulation is sound, while the twist in the Peanut Hamper-AGIMUS storyline was unexpected but welcomed.

Bad
Not much character development but that’s okay considering the subject matter. However, the absence of T’Lyn – in the last two episodes, no less – is a mistake. Hopefully our Vulcan ensign returns to action soon!

Conclusion
Lower Decks Season 4 Ep 7 is another fun adventure in the Star Trek universe. Highly recommended for Trekkers!
