Loki S01E02 is the second instalment of the first season of a scifi superhero action-adventure drama set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The series stars Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the God of Mischief, Loki Laufeyson which Hiddleston had previously portrayed in the MCU, most notably as the main antagonist in The Avengers.

Entitled “The Variant”, Loki S01E02 reveals the ostensible antagonist of the series – another alternate version of the Loki character – exactly like the protagonist, but different. This variant is female – although when one considers that Loki is a shape-shifting and gender-fluid to boot, that may be simply the variant’s identification for the moment. This female version – Lady Loki, if you will – has very distinct plans for the so-called Sacred Timeline, in effect to introduce chaos into the order.

Much of Loki S01E02 is spent – like the first episode – in the Time Variance Authority (TVA) offices and focused on dialogue between Loki and agent Mobius (Owen Wilson). Presumably, this narrative choice was to leverage on the chemistry between Hiddleston and Wilson, and their respective acting chops. To be honest, this only works because of the two actors, because nothing really happens for much of “The Variant”.
But thankfully by the end, we are guaranteed things have been shaken up going into the next four episodes as the Multiverse is effectively caused by Lady Loki’s machinations and Loki’s plans – to take over the TVA – are effectively sidelined, for now. Hopefully, the rest of the series will pick up the pace somewhat and introduce factors that will resonate throughout the MCU. If not, then what was the point of this series, eh?
So, it’s fair to say that based on Loki S01E02 we continue to be underwhelmed by Loki so far so things need to improve.
