An opportunity to watch singer-songwriter Charlie Lim in performance is always one to grasp with both hands. So thanks to Sarah Sim (Riot!) for putting me on the guest list for this wonderful event.
Ostensibly, an event to launch Charlie’s first ever music video – it morphed into a intimate evening with Charlie and friends (iNCH, JAWN, Jaime Wong & Dru Chen) performing stripped down versions of originals and covers.
Even though the SingJazz Club was as quiet as a church for most of the occasion, it was obvious that the 80 plus crowd in attendance thoroughly enjoyed what they were witnessing. Amongst them other local scene-sters like Ben Kheng (The Sam Willows) and Lyndsey Long (Suasion).
Charlie on stage is witty, awkward and a brilliant performer. What was slightly different was that Charlie was a bit more relaxed and able to share some background behind his songwriting. My favourite moment was how “Bitter” was inspired by a guitar arrangement for a Feist cover. Priceless.
And the music video? Well, how about Charlie without his trademark specs? Or Charlie dragging an airplane chair from out of the sea? Or Charlie running through sand dunes? Yes all that and more. Poignant overall (it is a Charlie Lim music video, after all!) it’s a video that will resonate with fans of the Lost TV series.
