LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: HOW TO DESTROY A FAN-FAVOURITE FRANCHISE

Legion of Super-Heroes

Legion of Super-Heroes is an animated superhero movie based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name. The movie was produced before the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Saffran as joint heads of DC Studios and thus anything that happened here is largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, as far as the reset DC Universe is concerned. So what’s the point?

S P O I L E R S

The Legion of Super-Heroes is one of the most confusing DC franchises, having gone through numerous reboots and losing its loyal fanbase. Although it’s had a TV series and its characters have appeared in the “Arrowverse Supergirl” show, neither have been well received by fans.

This latest adaptation follows Supergirl, who is struggling after the loss of Krypton, as she joins the Legion Academy in the 31st century at the suggestion of her cousin, Superman. However, the story is disorienting, with familiar characters showing up as Academy students and a confusing storyline about a mysterious group called the Dark Circle and a traitor in the Legion.

Worse still, the traitor is ultimately revealed to be fan-favourite character Mon-El?!?!?! That is a bitter pill to swallow for long-time Legion fans. Conveniently (or not), the Legion of Super-Heroes barely appear in this movie with its name in the title. Most of the Legion is away on a mission leaving behind three Legionnaires viz. Timber Wolf, Shadow Lass and Chemical King! Maybe the movie should be called “Supergirl and the Legion Academy”?

Ultimately, this adaptation of the Legion of Super-Heroes is a failure, and fans of the franchise are likely to be disappointed. It’s recommended to avoid it.
