Krapopolis Season 1 Ep 1-2

Krapopolis Season 1 Ep 1-2 are the first episodes of an American animated sitcom created by Dan (Rick and Morty) Harmon for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The show is set in mythical ancient Greece and centers on a flawed family of humans, gods, and monsters trying to run one of the world’s first cities (the titular city) without killing each other. The series has already been renewed for its second AND third seasons!

S P O I L E R S

The premise of Krapopolis revolves around the most dysfunctional family possible. The main character is Tyrannis, Deliria (his mother) is a non-canonical Greek goddess, Shlub (his father) is a half man, half manticore creature. Then, there is his half-brother Hippocampus (a human-manticore-merman hybrid), and half-sister Stupendous (demigod-cyclops hybrid) to complete the absurdist ancient historical picture.

Krapopolis has been a strange and wonderful journey thus far as Tyrannis attempts to build a civilisation with absurd outcomes. His mother Deliria is his main antagonist as her narcissism jams up Tyrannis’ best laid plans in hilarious fashion, while Shlub, Hippocampus and Stupendous try their best to support him in their own idiosyncratic ways. Once more, hilarity (well, mostly silliness) ensues.

Not quite sure what to make of this series so early in the game. It’s impossible to take seriously and thus lacks the character engagement that Rick and Morty so successfully engenders. Sure, the modern takes on ancient historical scenarios can be interesting but so far we see no reason to really care about anything that happens. Fact is also, that the humour is only on a mild level and so it does not connect on that level either.

In the final analysis, while the premise of Krapopolis provides certain amount of promise, the jury is still out as to whether it will succeed of not.
