Fourteen years! That’s how long it took director Brad Bird to put together the sequel to Pixar’s animated foray into the superhero genre, The Incredibles.
Remember that when The Incredibles first saw light of day, superhero movies were still relatively fresh and the Marvel Cinematic Universe was four years away, with the release of Iron Man.
So the big question was how well would Incredibles 2 hold up in a movie industry utterly dominated by superheroes?
Very well, thank you very much!
As a family-friendly cartoon, the plot of Incredibles 2 would, by necessity, be simple and straight-forward. Easy enough for a 5 year old to grasp. Which is fine when one considers the target market.
Where the film does excel is in the cutting edge animation and breath-taking action sequences. The detail on the characters and the imagination and execution of the kinetic set pieces will enthral viewers of every age.
Jack-Jack, the youngest member of the Parr family is the star of the show, as the film explores his numerous powers with hilarious effect.
Without the baggage usually associated with comic book adaptations, Incredibles 2 is probably the most lay audience friendly of all the superhero movies but fans of the genre might find its plot and characterisations somewhat lacking depth.
