Halo Season 1 Episode 2 Analysis

Halo Season 1 Episode 2 is the second episode of an American military science fiction television series developed by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane for the streaming service Paramount+, based on the video game franchise of the same name. The series had been languishing in development hell since 2013 before becoming a streaming TV series, after failing to appear as a movie or traditional TV series. The first season will feature nine episodes, with a 2nd season already greenlit.

Entitled “Unbound”, Halo Season 1 Episode 2 picks up directly from where the first episode ended – after Master Chief John-117 disobeys orders to escape The Reach with the rebel girl Kwan – due to his interaction with the Covenant artefact, revealed to us as the “Keystone”. John-117 seeks refuge from a former Spartan colleague Soren but after another encounter with the Keystone, decides to leave Kwan behind, head back to The Reach and surrender! Huh? Which means this episode was an utter waste of time!!

Seriously, is the series trying to tell us how lame John-117 is? How incapable of independent thought he is that once he is informed that the Keystone provides a gateway to a ring that can end all existence – according to Reth, a lunatic who has previous experience with the Covenant – John-117 freaks out and heads back to the UNSC and Dr. Halsey. Back to square one, almost. In effect, the episode did not move the storyline one iota.

That said, to be fair, there were numerous thin plot threads being introduced which involve Dr. Halsey and her plans for Cortana – an upgrade on the Spartans, Makee – a human member of the Covenant on a mission to retrieve the Keystone and of course, Kwan’s desire to reclaim her home planet Madrigal. Despite all this, Halo Season 1 Episode 2 is still a terrible episode, things need to get better and fast!

Now streaming on Paramount+.
