Well obviously we held certain reservations when it was announced that Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) would be directing the new Star Trek movie. And whilst the first trailer did not allay those fears, this second trailer has gone a long way towards repairing awful first impressions.
From the trailer the plot of Beyond becomes clearer – The USS Enterprise is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens and Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) orders his crew to abandon ship. With the crew – Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), “Bones” (Karl Urban), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) stranded on a unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy viz. Krall (Idris Elba) who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for.
Set up quite well, it will be intriguing to discover how – with the help of alien warrior Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) – the Star Trek crew will get themselves out of this particular dilemma.
Considering how bad Star Trek Into Darkness was, it would not take much for Justin Lin to redeem the franchise from J.J. Abrams’ folly and at least based on the new trailer, Lin is heading in the right direction.
Star Trek Beyond opens in Singapore on 21st July 2016.
