GEEK OUT! HOW DC FANDOME REBOOTED THE DC FILM UNIVERSE

Identity Crisis!

The so-called DC Extended Universe suffered a crisis of faith in the period between the Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice and Justice League movies. Director Zack Snyder’s gritty realistic vision of the DC universe was not finding favour with critics and mainstream audiences expecting superhero movies to look like those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Snyder was axed from the Justice League movie and Avengers director Joss Whedon was brought in to change the movie into a more MCU-friendly romp. Under the supervision of producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Whedon spent in excess of $50 million to deliver a Frankenstein’s monster that tanked at the box office in 2017.

Since then, while both Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018) have done well financially, Shazam! (2019) and Birds of Prey (2020) have under-performed. Meanwhile the standalone Joker (2019) outperformed all expectations, both critically and commercially.

In the wake of Avengers : Endgame (2019) smashing all box office records, DC Films needed to re-frame the conversation regarding its future. Arguably, this was achieved in the recently concluded DC Fandome event, an online convention. Let’s run through what has made DC Films buzzworthy once again.

The Snyder Cut

Fan activism has allowed the head honchos at Warner Media to redeem the Justice League fiasco with the release of the Zack Snyder cut at HBOMax. The teaser has whetted the appetite of hardcore DC fans, even if the haters and trolls maintain their ambivalence to the project. Slated for 2021, the cut will have a run time of 4 hours to be delivered in 4 parts!

The Batman

The success of the Joker standalone movie has persuaded DC Films to lean heavily into the multiverse concept with this Batman reboot. Director Matt Reeves is presenting a new version of the dark knight detective with Robert Pattinson in the lead role, with plans to explore this pocket universe with a streaming ongoing series at HBOMax. Promising.

WW1984

The release of the Wonder Woman sequel has been delayed multiple times and was impacted by the global pandemic as well. Now scheduled for release in October 2020, it will be litmus test for whether the film industry stands in these troubled times. The latest trailer revealed the full Cheetah CGI and expectations remain high.

The Suicide Squad

James Gunn’s dismissal from Disney in 2018 due to a Twitter outrage, landed him with the Suicide Squad sequel. Based in the footage first look, it does seem that Gunn is making the most of this opportunity and is leveraging the absurdist aspects of the Suicide Squad concept. One to watch, for sure.

Black Adam

While no footage was forthcoming, this Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson vehicle provided enough information to get DC fans dizzy over this addition to the DC Films universe. Even more exciting is the confirmation that Black Adam will introduce the Justice Society with the likes of Hawkman, Dr Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone confirmed.
