The latest Star Wars sequel is a mere 3 days away from opening in Singapore and hordes of geeks are eagerly waiting to see whether director JJ Abrams can return the series to its former glories, after the dismal critical reception of the prequels back in 1999 – 2005, despite the trilogy grossing a total of $2.5 billion at the box office.
By all accounts, based on the trailers, Abrams is bringing the series back to its roots i.e. the original trilogy (episodes IV – VI, 1977 – 1983) with real sets and practical effects, with less emphasis on computer-generated imagery.
The general consensus is that the prequels somewhat tarnished the Star Wars legacy, with creator-director George Lucas selling the franchise to Disney after his own disillusionment with the highly-charged negative response to the prequels. On the day of the sale in 2012, news of The Force Awakens was also announced and now three years later, all geekdom is united in anticipation.
Unlike the prequels, this new trilogy has close connections with the original trilogy, utilising Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) & Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to bridge the gap. With the introduction of three new main characters viz. Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Bodeya) & Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac) and Lucas nowhere near the story or direction, we can at least expect that whilst the film may not reach the heights of The Empire Strikes Back, it should be better than the prequels.
May the Force be with YOU!
