From S01E05 Story Analysis

From S01E05 is the fifth instalment of the first season of an American science fiction-horror television series created and written by John Griffin and executive produced by the Russo brothers. The premise – a seemingly normal middle American town is actually a nightmarish trap which keeps unwilling residents captive. But worse than that, at night murderous monsters roam the town and are only kept at bay if residents stay indoors and are protected by strange artefacts. Staying alive and searching for a way out occupy the minds of these unfortunate victims.

What’s in the box?

Entitled “Silhouettes”, From S01E05 does not even bother to get the audience any closer to solving the mysteries inherent in the series. Worse still, it spends the entire episode depicting Sara’s execution of the mysterious directions as teased in the last episode. Fact is, we the audience know for sure that Sara will not get to kill little Ethan Matthews and thus there is zero tension whatsoever in this episode. To be fair, we do get a twisted death but not the person Sara was ordered to kill though.

Which makes From S01E05 a massive disappointment, which is par for the course now for the series. Not good enough. The most we got with respect to the fundamental mystery of the series is with discussions on Schrödinger’s Cat – literally not knowing whether a cat is alive or dead until you open the (mystery?) box AND Tabitha Matthews asking the question – “Did we survive the crash?” The fact that this was a popular fan theory on Lost – whether the series is set in hell or purgatory – seems like the writers are clutching at straws.

Nowhere fast!

From S01E05 was boring and tedious and sent the series backwards. If there is no improvement in the next instalment, perhaps its time to abandon ship!
