FOUNDATION S01E03 (REVIEW)

Foundation S01E03

Foundation S01E03 is the third instalment of the first season of an American science fiction epic streaming drama based on the classic novel series written by Isaac Asimov. Asimov developed high concepts regarding the decline and fall of empires and civilisations in his Foundation series of novels (number seven in total).

Entitled “The Mathematician’s Ghost”, Foundation S01E03 narrates two strands of plots 19 and 17 years apart from the end of episode two. Which is frustrating because this episode fails to address the dramatic cliffhanger of the previous episode totally. What happened to Gael???? C’mon!

Foundation S01E03

Foundation S01E03 spends its early minutes elaborating a bit more about the Cleons and how they relate to one another and to how the three brothers – Dawn, Day and Dusk – provide a holy trinity of sorts as the Emperor. While this was fairly interesting, it did not bring the story any further than what was already established in the first two episodes. In that respect, the narrative seemed to go backwards.

Then, we are brought forward in time once more with Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey) being the central character as a descendent of the team that the now-deceased Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) formed and re-located to Terminus. This was alluded to in the very first episode with regards to the mysterious vault – an alien artefact that generates a null-field to ward off intruders.

Foundation S01E03

Hardin is not a very interesting character if truth be told – she’s has been appointed as a warden to protect the team in Terminus – and the episodes depicts what her day-to-day life is like until a new threat endangers the status quo of Terminus to create some kind of tension in the episode and that ends this chapter once more with a cliffhanger. Will that be addressed in the next episode? Hopefully. Sigh.
