ELECTRIC DREAMS – EPISODE 4

Philip K Dick Electric Dreams – Episode 4 is the fourth instalment in the scifi anthology series based on the short stories of the iconoclastic scifi writer. As we have mentioned before, the problem with Electric Dreams is that it has issues adapting the original Philip K Dick short stories. Oh we truly believe that the producers cheated with this episode of Philip K Dick’s Electric Dreams.

Although it’s claimed to be based on Dick’s short story “Sales Pitch” (1954) – a satire on advertising – this episode only retains the names of the protagonist (Ed Morris) and his wife (Sally) and nothing else!

Confusingly, its title and the use of Syd Barrett’s “Octopus” (performed by Robyn Hitchcock & Blur’s Graham Coxon)  also suggest a Pink Floyd connection, which also does not exist!

Instead, “Crazy Diamond” weaves a new tale utilising many of Dick’s core themes i.e. the highly flawed male anti-hero, the untrustworthy female antagonist, dystopian state control, environmental issues, the human-clone interaction and the impact of technology on society as a whole.

Steve Buscemi excels in his role as Ed Morris, Sidse Babett Knudsen (last seen in Westworld) brings empathy to Jill, the dying clone who needs a new ‘soul’ and Julia Davis’ unsatisfied Sally Morris completes the triangle.

Probably the most plot dense instalment so far, Electric Dreams – Episode 4 aka “Crazy Diamond” succeeds insofar as it builds a world straight out of Dick’s imagination – rather like Blade Runner 2049 – the rest is hubris.
