Counterpart (from Starz) was one of the most inventive scifi TV series in recent memory.

The series takes a Cold War spy concept and sets it in an alternate reality where there are two earths side by side.

Reminiscent of Fringe, this idea was fleshed out in Howard Silk (JK Simmons), a hapless UN employee discovers the agency he works for is hiding a gateway to a parallel dimension that’s in Cold War with our own, and where his other self is a top spy.

Due to the events that played out in season 1, our earth has shut the gateway and cut off all communications between the two worlds. Each version of Silk is in the wrong dimension and they now have to figure out how to make things right again.

The two episodes in Season 2 thus far have dedicated an episode each entirely to one world or the other. An interesting narrative that mirrors what has happened in the series.

As always, there are twists and turns that keep the tension high and things are never as they seem. Characters are hiding secrets and nobody can be trusted.

The writing is top notch and the performances stellar. One of the best shows out there right now. Highly recommended!

still there’s more …
