Candy Parts 2 - 3 Analysis

Candy Parts 2 – 3 are the second and third instalments of an American true crime drama streaming television miniseries created by Nick Antosca and Robin Veith. The series stars Jessica Biel as the real-life Candy Montgomery, who was accused of brutally murdering her best friend, Betty Gore (played by Melanie Lynskey) in 1980s Texas. In our previous analysis of Part 1, we indicated that this miniseries had been stripped of all tension and conflict due to the fact that it was a true crime drama and we the audience knew exactly what was coming.

In Candy Parts 2 – 3, the narrative is occupied with flashbacks to give us an idea as to why Candy ended up brutally murdering Betty, her best friend. This definitely makes the miniseries more interesting as, though we know the outcome, we are curious as to the circumstances that led up to the homicide. After all, by all accounts Candy Montgomery came across like a normal church-going home-maker, mother of two, and not a murderer!

Candy Parts 2 – 3 lays out the ‘why’ simply. Candy was having an affair with Betty’s husband Allan. As the story goes, Candy had become disillusioned with her marriage and was inspired by her lady pastor – of all people – to get involved in an extra-marital affair! She chose Allan to be that illicit liaison which the latter ended once Betty had become pregnant with their second child and the couple had gotten closer through marriage therapy.

Ironically, Candy had elected to become Betty’s best friend during the time that she was having the affair with Allan. All very complicated and messy. Still, that does not explain why Candy would kill Betty and in such a brutal fashion – hacked at her with an axe! Presumably that is what the final two parts will clarify – analyses to come soon!
