The Steve McQueens found time in between tours of Australia and South Korea to bring their magic jazz-soul-funk ride to home fans at the Annexe Sessions on Thursday, September 29th.
Over 130 punters filled The Esplanade’s spanking new venue – The Annexe Studio – and none went away less than ecstatic with what they had witnessed. The band viz. Ginny Bloop (vocals), Joshua Wan (keys), Jase Sng (bass), Fabian Lim (sax), Aaron James Lee (drums) and new addition, Andrew Lim (guitar), were in top form, gig-ready from touring and tight ‘n’ loose, if you know what we mean.
As usual, The Steve McQueens were a delight to behold – six world class musicians interacting with distinctive textures and harmonious counterpoints – with Ginny providing the focal point, vocally and visually. An invigorating “Summer Star” closed their dynamic first set with the promise of more.
New songs illuminated the second set – “Hephestus”, “Sun” and especially “Barbwire Tree” – boding well for the highly anticipated sophomore full-length. Quite obviously The Steve McQueens have upped the ante with the new material with intricate arrangements anchored by memorable riffs – the perfect balance.
One of our very own.
The Steve McQueens play Zandari Festa in Seoul on October 2nd.
… still there’s more …
