BILL LLOYD
Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
(Koch)
It's particularly telling that an illustration of a Rickenbecker guitar dominates the back of this
superb album. Lloyd may not be much of a singer but as a pop artisan he clearly is a technical
genius. The 12 strings shimmer, the melodies glide and all the right references get the proper
treatment and incorporation. Cool and Gone is a power pop classic that deserves much more
recognition than it will ultimately get. Look out for able assists from Brad Jones, Marshall
Crenshaw, Tom Petersen (Cheap Trick) and Dennis Diken (Smithereens). A pop essential for
1999. B+
