BETTER THINGS SEASON 5 EPISODE 8 (REVIEW)

Better Things Season 5 Episode 8 is the eighth instalment of the 5th (and final) season of an American comedy-drama television series created by Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K. for FX, starring Adlon as a divorced actress who raises her three daughters on her own. This final season brings back Sam Fox (Adlon) and her dysfunctional family of daughters, mother, brother, ex-husband and assorted close friends.

Entitled “Jesus Saves”, Better Things Season 5 Episode 8 can be safely broken down into three parts. First, we have Sam’s becoming a British citizen accompanied by her mother and daughter Duke. Secondly, there is the impromptu party at Sam’s place as friends of the family bid Sam farewell before their family holiday. Finally, the hilarious plane journey as Sam and company made their way over to Old Blighty!

While the first two parts were run of the mill and a little mundane, the third part was funny as Sam’s family awkwardly interact with the unwashed masses, so to speak. A plane trip scenario is always ripe for comedy, especially in economy class where every inconvenience is easily blown out of proportion! Something everybody can identify with!

Regular viewers will be aware that Better Things is loosely autobiographical and Pamela Adlon had herself recently become a British citizen and thus, this development was probably anticipated by diehard fans. It keeps the series grounded in reality and maintains its slice of life aesthetic. That said, it certainly is not for every taste and unless you are on the Adlon train, it can seem like a waste of time.

But for the Adlon geeks, Better Things Season 5 Episode 8 is a nice touch, slowly but steadily bringing us closer to the end of the series. Heopfully, we will all be let down slowly and gently.
