Better Things Season 5 Episode 10 is the finale of the 5th (and final) season of an American comedy-drama television series created by Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K. for FX, starring Adlon as a divorced actress who raises her three daughters on her own. This final season brings back Sam Fox (Adlon) and her dysfunctional family of daughters, mother, brother, ex-husband and assorted close friends.
Entitled “We Are Not Alone”, Better Things Season 5 Episode 10 puts a period (pun intended!) on the story of Sam and her family. In the previous episode, Sam had ‘lost’ her mother Phil and daughter Max to England and this provided a massive shake up of her status quo as she embraced moving on with her life. Her focus would be on her two younger daughters as she places a “for sale” sign on her mother’s property – definitely a concrete sign of the next phase.

There is an incongruous moment that cements the the change in circumstances as Sam’s BFF Sunny reunites with deadbeat husband Jeff, a wedding ceremony which Sam herself officiates. It is a symbolic moment to have everything in the series to come together to say farewell to the audience, who have enjoyed watching this cast of characters touch our collective lives for the last five years or so.
As always, Better Things Season 5 Episode 10 uses the little moments to bring across what’s important in life. The overgrown fish that is set free into the lake – against the law it seems – is yet another symbol – of outgrowing the status quo and once more, of moving on. At the very end, the cast sing along to a rendition of Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” – it is poignant, touching and timely, as the world slowly gets out of over two years of a global pandemic. Thank you Pamela Adlon and company for Better Things!
