BETTER THINGS SEASON 5 EP 5 (REVIEW)

Better Things S05E05 Review

Better Things Season 5 Ep 5 is the fifth instalment of the 5th season of an American comedy-drama television series created by Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K. for FX, starring Adlon as a divorced actress who raises her three daughters on her own. This final season brings back Sam Fox (Adlon) and her dysfunctional family of daughters, mother, brother, ex-husband and assorted close friends.

Entitled “The World is Mean Right Now”, Better Things Season 5 Ep 5 highlights how Sam is sandwiched between her demanding daughters and her mother as she also worries about her health as she gets older. As mentioned in the episode title, the episode is truly about Sam having to deal with the challenges that her family situation presents her.

What we have always loved about Better Things is how Adlon presents Sam, warts and all. She constantly frets about being a bad mother and daughter and is never afraid to express her dissatisfaction with the behaviour of her family members. If like us, you have been on Sam’s journey these five seasons, it’s easy to identify with her struggle and the engagement level continues to be extremely high for that reason.

Being as character-driven as Better Things Season 5 Ep 5 is, there is obviously no reliance on melodrama to deliver engagement as the audience’s connection with Sam and her family carries us through. This is the difference with other comedy-dramas like, say, Curb Your Enthusiasm, where the story elements are heightened somewhat – Better Things always maintains a realistic tone and approach throughout. After all, the series IS based on Adlon’s own life so that is to be expected – and often demanded by the audience.

Better Things Season 5 Ep 5 is yet another slice of life adventure that diehard fans will no doubt savour. Enjoy!
