Better Things Season 5 Ep 4 is the fourth instalment of the 5th season of an American comedy-drama television series created by Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K. for FX, starring Adlon as a divorced actress who raises her three daughters on her own. This final season brings back Sam Fox (Adlon) and her dysfunctional family of daughters, mother, brother, ex-husband and assorted close friends.
Entitled “Ephemera”, Better Things Season 5 Ep 4 finds Sam having to deal with the issues of growing older, where social norms change – the whole schtick with the pronouns now, essentially – and she is forced to faced certain financial realities by her brother. On the plus side (for Sam anyways) – eldest child (happy now, Frankie?) Max returns to the nest and Sam is warned about Danny Trejo – whom she met in the previous episode.

It bears repeating that Better Things Season 5 Ep 4 contains everything we love about this series – nothing actually happens except life itself. The series is effectively a scripted reality show about Pamela Adlon’s life as the characters are based on Adlon’s own family. And of course, by this fifth (and final) season, we are so familiar with these characters that they feel like family. Naturally, as Frankie and Duke get older there are the usual teenage problems that Sam will have to try to solve as well.
Pamela Adlon is effectively Better Things – she is the lifeblood of the series and she continues to carry the series with verve, humour and patented awkwardness. Sam, this ‘five foot nothing’ dynamo may be a ball of contradictions but there’s always no denying that her heart is (usually) in the right place. Certainly, one of the better comedy dramas currently out there with enough slice of life moments to keep things relevant always. Highly recommended!
