Ant-Man and the Wasp delivers light-hearted comedic superhero action to MCU fans, after the dark and heavy Infinity War.
Set between the events of Captain America : Civil War and Infinity War, this movie reunites Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) with Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and of course, her father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) as they seek to recover the original Wasp/Janet Pym (Michelle Pffeifer) from the quantum realm.
It’s a simple story quest actually with straightforward obstacles in the form of protagonists phase-shifting Ghost, black marketeer Sonny Burch and the FBI.
The story hangs together very well between its various component parts, balancing humour and action sequences effectively to deliver a fun summer blockbuster.
Like the first movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp depends a lot on the concept of shrinking people and objects, leveraging it for sensational set pieces that dazzle.
Of course, there are lapses in logic that gnaw ever so slightly at the fragile suspension of disbelief – most notably the idea of wheeling a miniaturised building around – what about its foundations? – but comedy, action and the charisma of Rudd and Lilly just about papers over those plot cracks.
