POWER OF POP MUSIC ALBUM REVIEW: STARFLYER 59 – SLOW

ALBUM REVIEW: STARFLYER 59 – SLOW

sf59

Background
Jason Martin is the sole songwriter behind Starflyer 59, a project that combines his love for British shoegaze, Beatlesque pop, dreamy space rock, and the songcraft of assorted indie bands. Slow is Martin’s 14th studio album.

Strengths
A definitive indie rock sound that remains as potent as when Starflyer 59’s debut release Silver, first appeared back in the 90s. Steady motorik rhythms anchor meticulously technical guitars as Martin’s barely audible vocals ruminate on melancholy subjects. No emotional highs but instead a languorous groove that is unrelentingly uncompromising.

Highlights
“Slow”, “Cherokee”, “Long Time”.

Sounds Like
New Order, The Cure, Love & Rockets.

Bottom Line
Not quite the dreamy space rock of yore, Slow settles comfortably into its furrow early on and never quite deviates from its path throughout. Dependable.
