ALBUM REVIEW: PUP – THE DREAM IS OVER

PUP

Background
Pup (stylised as PUP i.e. Pathetic Use of Potential) is a Canadian punk rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario in 2013, originally under the name Topanga. The Dream is Over is the band’s sophomore effort.

Strengths
Punk rock that leans more towards the 80s US hardcore scene than the risible pop punk of the last 15 years. Sure there are pop melodies strongly evident in these crash and burn punk songs but laced with humour and a self-deprecating attitude that is refreshing.

Highlights
“If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will”, “Doubts”, “Sleep in the Heat”, “Pine Point”.

Sounds Like
Weezer, Green Day, Beach Slang.

Bottom Line
Under-20s have famously abandoned the rock music style but bands like PUP might have a crack at changing the status quo.
