ALBUM REVIEW: DOVES & RAVENS – WONDER

dnr

Background
Founding members of pop-rock band, Doves and Ravens, Kenneth Qua and Edwin Wong, became instant friends in 2010 over a shared love for music. Now, joined by bassist Moses Wong, the band plays pop-rock, radio-friendly music influenced by 80’s/90’s music. Wonder is the band’s debut album.

Strengths
A consistent application of 80s/90s pop-rock styles to its songwriting. Wonder is a convincing effort for this young band, with all the elements in the right place. There is a likeable naivety to the manner in which Doves & Ravens sincerely approaches its music making. Genuinely catchy melodies and hooks make Wonder a valuable addition to all pop-rock fans.

Highlights
“Make Believe”, “Move On”, “Pieces”.

Sounds Like
Eagle-Eye Cherry, Sister Hazel, Matchbox Twenty.

Bottom Line
Doves & Ravens is a breath of fresh air in a scene dominated by folk and soul-jazz singer-songwriters, unashamedly pop-rock in the best meaning of the genre.
