A Walk Among the Tombstones is a 2014 American neo-noir action thriller film directed and written by Scott Frank, and based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Lawrence Block. It stars Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, David Harbour, and Boyd Holbrook. (Wikipedia)
Actor Liam Neeson’s third act has been defined by his role in Taken – the invincible, grizzled man of action on a mission – which he duly reprised in other action movies like Unknown, The Grey and Non Stop to great effect. In this respect, this crime drama is no different.
Set in 1999, this adaptation of Lawrence Block’s book of the same name, sees Neeson playing Matthew Scudder, an ex-NYPD detective who quit the force after an unfortunate incident, leading him to become an unlicensed private investigator whilst also recovering from alcoholism.
Scudder is hired by a drug dealer (Stevens) to locate the kidnappers of his wife, who murdered her despite receiving the ransom money. In the course of this quest, Scudder has to face his personal demons and ultimately is presented with an opportunity to redeem himself from past transgressions.
The narrative is rather muddy – often interrupted by Scudder’s relationship with TJ, a teenage boy (Brian Bradley) – although the story manages to shoehorn TJ’s relevance late in the game. As usual, Neeson’s Scudder manages to solve the mystery and set things right – sometimes conveniently – although there are times where leaps of logic are needed to make the plot work.
If you are a Liam Neeson fan (and seriously who isn’t) then, A Walk Among The Tombstones contains enough of his trademark set pieces to keep you interested.
