ALBUM REVIEW: THE BESNARD LAKES – A COLISEUM COMPLEX MUSEUM
The Besnard Lakes are a Canadian indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Formed in 2003 by the husband and wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, the band also includes Kevin Laing (drums), Richard White (guitar), Sheenah Ko (keyboards) and Robbie MacArthur (guitar).

PoPTV: THE NEW ROCK N ROLL
Rock ‘n’ roll might not have the same commercial or cultural impact it used to have but we promise to keep the flag flying.
Here are videos of new music you should be listening to that expresses the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. Enjoy!

ALBUM REVIEW: MYSTERY JETS – CURVE OF THE EARTH
To be honest, have never quite been able to connect with the music of Mystery Jets, for one reason or another. However, one has to admire the manner in which this English band has stuck to their guns and followed the pop-rock muse, wherever it might have led them.

GEEK OUT! SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER
Yes, this is a fantastic trailer. BUT even the Fantastic Four reboot had a fantastic trailer! So who knows?
All I know is that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is going to steal the show. And combined with Jared Leto’s Joker? Surely a Joker-Harley movie cannot be far behind…
Hope DC has enough Harley Quinn toys ready for the inevitable demand.
Opening in Singapore August 4th!
LIVE NEWS: LANEWAY SINGAPORE 2016 ADDING FOURTH STAGE!
Laneway Festival Singapore has announced the instalment of a fourth stage at this year’s event. Set up with local collective Syndicate, the stage brings together a new genre of local and international electronic DJs and visual artists, including Australia’s JPS, Singapore’s Mean, and visual artist Brandon Tay accompanying duo Kiat & Kane on stage.
Tickets
If this doesn’t signal the death of rock ‘n’ roll, I don’t know what does then. Clearly, the Laneway Singapore organisers found it commercially viable to install a fourth stage and then feature electronic artists rather than rock acts. Whilst I am pleased for Syndicate and how this is a feather in their cap, it’s certainly sad to see that one of the biggest festivals in Singapore (and an Aussie one at that) will barely feature any rock ‘n’ roll music.
SINGLE REVIEW: WEEZER – KING OF THE WORLD
It seems Weezer forgot to read the ‘Rock is Dead” memo – what the fuck are they doing still playing electric guitars & real drums?!?!
KEVIN SAYS …
Since the late 80s, there have been numerous pronouncements of the death of rock ’n’ roll. Each time, the prophets of doom have been proven wrong – the 1990s with the rise of Nirvana and the 2000s with the Strokes and the post-punk revival. But I sincerely fear that 2016 might be the year that time is called on the former institution known as rock ’n’ roll.
Perhaps it is the death of David Bowie that has depressed me to such an extent that this doomsday scenario now becomes a reality. But just look at the Billboard Top 20 singles and you will realise that rock ’n’ roll is completely absent. I have also been analysing the acts on Laneway Singapore 2016 and bar the rare exception (like Cashew Chemists), again there are no bands playing rock ’n’ roll!
This realisation has also aided in my decision to quit as a solo performer, whether live or in the studio – and focus on other aspects in my life. My main pre-occupation in music will be as a journalist and hopefully, as a curator and mentor. That is the only way I can see myself making a contribution. My music as a solo artist has no fucking significance whatsoever. Time to move on then.
… still there’s more …

LIVE NEWS: STARS – LIVE IN SINGAPORE ON VALENTINE’S DAY
One of the pioneering indie rock concerts in Singapore took place way back in January 2009, when a gobsmacked STARS played a sold out concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall. That concert established firmly that there was a strong market in Singapore for indie rock and the rest is history…

PoPTV: DAVID BOWIE – SOUND AND VISION
Bowie in his element – as captured by his 1977 hit single – and as usual, in full control of what he wants his audience to see and hear.
“Space Oddity”
FAREWELL, MR. JONES
What can I say about David Bowie that thousands of others have not already said? The fact that on my social media it has been non-stop reflection on his death is testament enough of how much people loved him and his music.
GRAPHIC NOVEL REVIEW: THE RESIDENT TOURIST (PART 7)
At the launch of the seventh edition of Troy Chin’s The Resident Tourist held at Books Kinokuniya, the author himself mentioned to me that my reviews of his books are ‘biased’. Meaning that my glowing assessments of his work are somehow less than objective due to the fact that I appreciated their intrinsic value as art.

GEEK OUT! SOYLENT GREEN: A RETROSPECTIVE ASSESSMENT BY MARIA RAMOS
Soylent Green on Energy Use, Pollution, and Overpopulation
1973’s Soylent Green may be best known for being people, but this classic of dystopian science fiction is much more than a catchphrase. At its heart, Soylent Green is a story of an overtaxed world, class disparity, and the trade-offs that humanity finds itself making in the name of survival. As a vision of the future it proved ahead of its time, envisioning what could happen if consumption were to continue unchecked.
