D.M.N.N.

No, I have no idea what the lyrics are about – though I guess it’s about the recent nuclear disaster in Japan. But what caught the ear was the fact that Rankin Taxi is a Japanese toaster! Haha yeah. Authentic reggae rhythms underpin this amazing song and even though I don’t understand a word of Japanese I really dug the way Rankin Taxi delivers the phrases. The video is bizarre but funny! Very very cool…

1. Why play music?

Music has always been a big part of my life. I got started playing guitar and writing songs at a very young age, and I can’t seem to stop!

Bob Mould is an alternative rock legend for his stellar work with seminal 80s band Husker Du but in the wake of the grunge phenomenon of the 90s, he enjoyed his biggest commercial success with Sugar. Now Merge Records is re-issuing the entire back catalog - Copper Blue & Beaster will be released as a 3CD set with b-sides & live show as bonus downloads whilst File Under Easy Listening will be released as a 2CD set.

“A minute for the long haul, I’m with you to the end…  Years later I decided to come college and I got to the University of San Diego. My parents were so happy but I studied Religion, Spanish and Political Science so I knew I don’t have a job but at least I know why.” That’s Steve Poltz for you. Though several days have passed after his gig at Esplanade Recital Studio, the encore, The Long Haul, is still stuck in my head. The San Diego musician would score, or probably do way better, as a stand-up comedian.

The line-up for this year’s Baybeats Festival (29 June to 1 July at the Esplanade) is decidedly Singapore-focused with 21 (!) local acts sharing the various stages with acts from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan. The emphasis on Singapore acts befits the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Esplanade, a venue that has impacted the local music scene in a highly positive manner in the last decade.

So mark your calendars on the above dates and look out for Obedient Wives Club, For This Cycle, King King Jane, Black Diamond Folds, Godzilla, Rudra, Rachael Teo, ANECHOIS, Cashew Chemists, The Fast Colors, Embrace Them Ghosts, Great Spy Experiment, Plainsunset, Deon, MONSTER CAT, Pep Talk, Inch Chua & Metric System, Run Neon Tiger, Cockpit, A Town In Fear & In Each Hand a Cutlass.

An exciting time for the indie music scene beckons…

THEY DON’T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO…

Haha yes, …dribbling… is back! No, I am NOT going to talk about the recently concluded Premiership season or the Champions League Final but I just want to say a short word or two about remembering a memorable moment in the history of the UEFA European Championship.

BELIEVE THE HYPE!

In many ways, the story of Pek Jin Shen—or ShiGGa Shay, as the rapper prefers to be known—is symptomatic of the odd complex Singaporeans have towards local music have in general. Ever since he first burst out on the scene in 2010 with a divisive performance on the short-lived Mediacorp production Live ‘N’ Loaded, he’s been dogged by accusations of arrogance and trying too hard to be American. Which is curious, because there’s really nothing more quintessentially Singaporean than wanting to be angmoh. But I digress.

RICK MURNANE

GOOD AS GOLD

There is a familiar, endearing (yes even enduring) quality about Rick Murnane‘s Wednesday Child. It is something magical that is rooted in the sounds of classic timeless pop music – birthed and nurtured throughout the golden age of the 60s and 70s. Murnane, with the help of his friend (in this case neighbour, Chris Collingwood of the Fountains of Wayne – who played drums and engineered the album) has concocted a fabulous collection of memorable pop tunes that recall the jangly, psychedelic folk-rock majesty of the Byrds, the Beatles and the Searchers, with a larynx that is reminiscent of both John Lennon and Roger McGuinn. Wednesday Child is the kind of musical treasure the card-carrying members of the Pop Underground spend hours obsessing over.

“ONE GOOD THING ABOUT MUSIC, WHEN IT HITS YOU FEEL NO PAIN”

Reggae pioneer Bob Marley was the very first third world superstar. His legacy is his incredible music, built on the foundations of reggae, birthed in his native Jamaica as its own folk music. More than thirty years after his early death, Marley still remains as relevant as ever, his influence on modern music is unmistakable and whilst many have adopted his style, Bob Marley will always be unique, a one-of-a-kind.

From Online To A Live Stage… But Are They Any Good?

As I walked up the Forum steps towards the Hard Rock Café Coliseum, where the YouTube Stars would be performing, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Yes, I know what YouTube is. Yes, I understand that lots of folks upload videos to YouTube. Yes, I’m aware that some folks make videos of themselves singing and playing musical instruments and their videos go viral, and that’s how some people got fame as singers, musicians and songwriters. But the big question on my mind that night was, are these same people any good in a live concert situation? Tonight was the night I would find out.

Greatest Hits: Live at Montreux 2011

I’ve lost count of the number of DVDs that Eagle Vision has released which feature live performances of Carlos Santana but this definitive ‘Greatest Hits’ two-DVD set probably the best one yet! But seriously, there is not much else to say about Santana – he is a guitar legend that has transcended his roots in San Francisco’s 70s psychedelic hippie scene to become a worldwide mainstream rock phenomenon.

AND THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY TOGETHER…

(Spoilers abound, so beware!)

About a year ago, I grumbled and lamented that the Season 3 finale had been so disappointing. Basically, I opined that removing Peter from existence did not make any sense whatsoever and was wondering how the writers would resolve this in Season 4. Well, over the course of the 22 episodes of the excellent Season 4, I’ve had to eat my words numerous times.

SHIGGA SHAY

ShiGGa Shay’s highly anticipated debut EP, They Call Me ShiGGa is finally done! This 9- track EP showcases ShiGGa Shay’s storytelling skills. The 19 year-old hip–hop artist navigates topics such as gaining acceptance as a musician in Singapore to the loss of his father to cancer.

Since early 2011, the rapper has been diligently working on this EP, working with several producers such as Kartell Records producer extraordinaire Muzique (from Flight School), Noctune & Outcome (from Malaysia), Don Richmond, The Architek and J Doug (from the United Kingdom). The young performer is quietly forming his own personal style and brand of hip-hop.

The album has been mixed by both Muzique and Don Richmond and mastered by Tony Dawsey at Masterdisk in New York City.

They Call Me ShiGGa is released digitally on Saturday 12 May 2012 through his official site: www.shiggashay.com and as a physical album with bonus additional material in early June. Pre-orders for the physical copies can be made on the official site on 12 May 2012.

With the resounding box office success of The Avengers, the summer blockbuster season has gotten off to the perfect start. To date, the Joss Whedon-helmed superhero movie spectacular has already grossed over US$800 million worldwide and there appears no reason to suppose that it will not surpass the billion dollar mark.

With science-fiction and fantasy themed movies capturing the imagination of the movie-going public, let’s take stock of what is the come in the months ahead and let’s speculate upon how well (or poorly – remember John Carter?) they will be received.
