61st Street Season 2 is the second season of an American legal drama TV series that delves into the corrupt Chicago criminal justice system. The first season introduced us to Moses Johnson, a promising high school athlete caught in a wrong-place-wrong-time situation. He gets entangled in a police raid and inadvertently causes the death of an officer, leading to a massive manhunt for him. Franklin Roberts, a frustrated criminal lawyer, becomes Moses’ defence attorney and takes up the challenge to prove his innocence. You can read our review of Season 1 here.

61st Street Season 2 came as a surprise cuz the Moses Johnson criminal trial was a complete story. Even more surprising perhaps that Season 2 is ultimately a stronger season than the first! Maybe it’s because, we were familiar with the characters already and the writers were able to develop the plot and characterisations even further. This time around, the focus is on Roberts, as he makes a risky decision to take on the Chicago Police Department by defending Johnny Logan for the brutal murder of a black man.
Now, this puts Roberts on the wrong side as far as the black community are concerned and he has to walk down a lonely path where even his loving family are not able to support him. Coupled with the fact that Roberts has only months to live and level of pathos is tripled! Certainly, it is not difficult to root for Roberts throughout this second season, which certainly makes for engaging viewing. By the end of the season, with the closing of the plot threads regarding the corrupt cop Brannigan and Phil Robinson’s duplicity regarding Norma Johnson. All done very satisfyingly it must be added.
In the final analysis, 61st Street Season 2 is essential viewing whether you enjoyed the first season or not. Highly recommended!
