Entitled “Two Trials”, 61st Street Episode 7 finally brings us the courtroom drama teased by the synopsis of this series. Franklin Roberts is in his element and at pains to get justice for his client, Moses Johnson. Roberts is our stereotypical protagonist making the play for his client’s very life. But of course, serious obstacles stand in his path to achieving his goal.
READ OUR ANALYSES OF 61ST STREET.
First, is the spy embedded with Norma Johnson – Big Phil, Norma’s recent mysterious boyfriend who seemingly appeared out of the blue – is really working for Brannigan and he obtains information that derails Roberts’ plans to discredit the testimony of Officer Logan. What is surprising is that Norma herself fails to suspect Phil, after this turn of events.
Second, Roberts’ own wife Martha is prioritising her political ambitions above the success the Moses’ trial. As Roberts obtains information that could help him discredit the police, Martha is against him introducing that information as evidence in support of Moses’ trial – a clear violation of his lawyer’s duties and responsibilities. Effectively, Martha is forcing Roberts to choose between her and Moses – a terribly unfair choice to make. It does not get more tense than that!
61st Street Episode 7 is probably the best episode of the series thus far, with Roberts taking centrestage, there is enough tension and conflict to keep our attention and engagement throughout. We find ourselves rooting for Roberts – what with his terminal cancer and the twin challenges outlined above. Expect more troubled times for Roberts next episode!
