Entitled “Over the Wall”, 61st Street Episode 5 fails to progress the series plot beyond Moses’ attempts to survive in jail while awaiting trial, as his lawyer Franklin Roberts has to deal with terminal cancer while trying to help Moses clear his name. The tease at the end of last episode concerning Franklin’s autistic son David, proved to be a false alarm, and somewhat unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Mystifying plot point.

Officer Logan gets himself embroiled in Brannigan’s corruption as the former discovers that the latter is truly on the take, as they say. However, Brannigan is also made aware of Rossi’s wire recordings and the relationship becomes strained. Where Logan actually stands, remains unclear at this point in time. Is he amassing evidence of Brannigan’s wrongdoing or has he bought into Brannigan’s ‘wealth-building’ schemes?
The other somewhat annoying plot thread involves Martha – Franklin’s wife – who harbours political ambitions and seemingly the couple are at odds with regards to the Johnson case. What is hard to swallow is the biting at the Martha’s heels by the mother of one of the deceased gang members – how she is able to influence Martha’s thinking is not quite explained. But clearly, Martha has been affected by this influence.
But ultimately, Moses’ re-connection with his estranged jailbird father, Speak, occupies most of this episode. Presumably, this is a necessary plot point to keep Moses alive in the circumstances, so we will leave it as it, for the time being. Hopefully, the trial will begin soon as there isn’t much legal narratives being examined at the moment.
