KELLY CLARKSON – GREATEST HITS: CHAPTER ONE [REVIEW]

Singer-songwriter Maricelle Wong shares with us her thoughts on fellow singer-songwriters…

Kelly Clarkson who? We all know who she is, this power-packed girl has been singing her way up charts ever since she was the winner of the inaugural American Idol season, easily one of the most successful singers after that show ended. Since that victory, she’s had lots of her songs become chart topping hits, but her success took awhile to pop up infront of her. She had been offered scholarships but decided to make it on her own after high school, working several different jobs to fund her recording.

LISTENING BOOTH: IRN MNKY – DJ SHADOW MIX [STREAMING/DOWNLOAD]

The word ‘remix’ basically defines DJ Shadow‘s stellar work and it’s a fitting tribute to the master himself for a new electronic artist like Irn Mnky to make a remix out of DJ Shadow’s own sampling works to create something new and distinct! What goes around comes around. Listen to and/or download the “DJ Shadow Mix”.

POWER OF POP INTERVIEW – VILLES

“Villes (pronounced ~Vils) are a 5 piece post-hardcore group hailing from Singapore” – a simple description from the band’s bio but probably does not do justice to what Villes delivers in recording and performance. Ahead of its debut EP launch, Bryan Ulric shares with us more information about this promising young band…

How did Villes come together as a band?

Our lineup as of now has gone though so many changes since we first started off. I’d have to say that Dominic (Vocalist) was the one that brought us all together. Three of us were active in our own separate bands (The Summer State, Tacit Aria and Face Off) but we always shared an interest of wanting to write music of a heavier genre. It’s really funny cause Dominic has always been the joker/class clown kinda friend to us and had never shown any of us any interest in being a musician all our years of knowing him, so when he sprung the news on us that he wanted to be a vocalist/frontman we honestly couldn’t really believe or take it seriously. But when we got into the studio and heard Dominic scream for the first time, we were completely blown away and couldn’t be happier that we had this gem in the band.

JIM JAMES ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM REGIONS OF LIGHT AND SOUND OF GOD OUT FEBRUARY 5TH ON ATO RECORDS [NEWS]

“I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time,” says Jim James. “Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future, if that makes any sense—like a hazy dream that a fully-realized android or humanoid capable of thought might have when it reminisces about the good old days of just being a simple robot.” Based on the first single – “Know Til Now” – it appears that the My Morning Jacket frontman has gone some way to achieving this effect. Check it out below.

POWER OF POP INTERVIEW – WE ARE THE EMERGENCY

We Are The Emergency hail from Perth, Australia and pride themselves for being an eclectic musical outfit, refusing to be stuck in a creative rut by ‘genre’ limitations. Bassist Sam Hart enlightens us about what makes WATE tick.

What’s the story behind the interesting name?

It was originally a name that I’d wanted to call my old band, but the other dudes weren’t that keen on it so I just put it aside. WATE used to be called Roses For The Dead haha which was very generic and pretty bad really, when we came to change our sound and decided to change names I suggested We Are The Emergency and we felt like it kind of fit with what were doing. At that point we were playing fairly heavier music and our live shows were just crazy spontaneous energy. Plus this was before there were a million bands with the ‘we are the’ preface to their name popping up haha.

PoPTV: LEWIS WATSON – SINK OR SWIM [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

The term “singer-songwriter” tends to be over-used somewhat nowadays but in the case of young Londoner Lewis Watson, it seems justified. Watson certainly carries a weighty maturity on his tender shoulders. With a sound that is reminiscent of Bon Iver and Villagers, he is a talent to keep close tabs on. As this video of “Sink or Swim” demonstrates.

ANDREA PERRY: KICKSTARTER FOR 4TH ALBUM [NEWS]

Andrea Perry is an artist that Power of Pop has featured in the last decade for her delightful journeys into ‘twee’ pop of the terminal kind. Naively imaginative in the way Perry constructs melody and lyrics, it has always been a pleasure to review her works. In any case, Perry is seeking support at Kickstarter for her latest recording project. Therefore, please watch the video below and then give Andrea the money she needs to finish up her new album!

PoPTV: TOM SHANER – UNSTOPPABLE HIPSTER [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

So digging this new discovery. Tom Shaner is a singer-songwriter whose music (according to his bio) has been described many different ways, but there is usually a very rooted quality to it. Shaner is readying the release of his new album Ghost Songs, Waltzes and Rock and Roll produced by Charles Newman (Magnetic Fields) for Mother West Records. This is the official video for the first single, “Unstoppable Hipster” – am loving its Bob Dylan/Elvis Costello vibe. Review to come!
