Around mid-2016, we made a conscious decision to revamp Power of Pop completely. We needed to narrow the site’s focus back on the music that we love i.e. pop-rock. In addition, we resolved to move away from reviews and concentrate on being a tastemaker, with an emphasis on discovery.
Thus, some form of re-branding was required and voilà, #THENEWROCKNROLL, #POPPOWER!!! & #ROCKHISTORY were brought about to segment the kinds of music lovers we were aiming for. This culminated in a new tagline for 2017.
TASTEMAKERS FOR THE DISCERNING POP CULTURE GEEK
So instead of casting the net wide, we narrowed our reach somewhat, hoping to connect with the people who would understand what the fuck we were trying to achieve here. And to a certain extent, we believe it has worked.
In terms of traffic, the stats look encouraging. From July to December the number of unique visitors rose to a daily average of 315, from a daily average of 245, for the previous six months! So at least the changes have had a positive impact. All told, we recorded a grand total of 3,848,558 hits in 2016.
Moving forward, we hope to be able to pay attention a bit more to geek movies, TV, books and comics. And along the way, report on the technological changes in pop culture that is coming in thick and fast.
