“The MTV Show” Season 2 Premieres Saturday, 20th April 2013
Two weeks ago, Power of Pop was invited to the preview of the second season of The MTV Show at the Waterfront Studio at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). MTV’s popular original series, The MTV Show, a weekly music and lifestyle show that features top-rated music videos, movies, celebrity news and popular culture, returns for its second season with a new format. The refreshed programming format enables its millennial viewers to determine what goes on the show, through active social media engagement.
The launch of the new season also introduces the appointment of MTV’s latest VJ, Alan Wong, who is already an experienced host and actor. Together with Hanli Hoefer, who was introduced a month ago, they form the new faces of the channel and will get to interact with viewers through their social media platforms for the show. It premieres on Saturday, 20 April and airs on MTV SEA every Saturday at 10am (WIB), 11am (SG/HK/PH) and 12pm (MAL) with exclusive content available online at mtvasia.com/themtvshow.
Shot at the Waterfront Studio at RWS, The MTV Show’s returning brand partner, highlights of the second season include:
- The People’s Chart – A democratic music selection voted online by viewers, who determine the chart movements and what gets played on the show
- Social engagement with viewers though Instagram dedications and requests, where viewers will stand to win prizes by submitting the most creative Instagram pictures
- Viewers get to interact with the new VJs through Twitter and Facebook by posting questions
- Weekly web videos that feature not only backstage or behind-the-scenes footage with the VJs, sneak peeks, or artist footage, but also include original web-only series around popular youth topics
At the preview held at the Waterfront Studio, Power of Pop, along with other media outlets, got to see a short preview of what an episode would look like. Though Hanli and Alan have the big shoes of Rich and Holly to fill and seemed slightly nervous, they were definitely eager and excited about this upcoming season of The MTV Show. I believe Hanli and Alan will definitely be able to step up, with both of them having much experience. Born and raised in California, Alan has appeared in several film, theatre and TV productions, including an acting part in Hannah Montana and an on-air promotion for Ugly Betty. The combination of Alan being a movie buff and Hanli a music lover makes for a good show as they complement each other. Hanli also has confidence from a fashion modelling background, and her spontaneous personality has a great role in building her on-screen chemistry with Alan, which appears very natural. Their interesting and unique personalities also led the show producers to build the second season of The MTV Show around them, as they gave the two new VJs the chance to write their own scripts and produce their own content on-air and online.
The MTV Show looks set for a great second season, with more interaction with viewers and discussion of issues that matter to the viewers. It was also extremely encouraging to hear that both VJs are extremely open to the local and regional music scene around them, and they are definitely willing to play dedications that may be considered less “commercial” or “mainstream”, and Hanli even gave a shoutout to Obedient Wives Club, saying that they are one of her favourite local bands! We look forward to the new and exciting format of the programming, making viewers feel more connected to each other with their personal sharing of pictures and dedications.
