FIERY BLUE

FIERY BLUE s/t (Doubloon)

The self titled debut of Fiery Blue, an indie folk rock band sparkles with its soft edges yet evocative lyrics. Created by the efforts of songwriter, Paul Marsteller, vocalist Simone Stevens and producer/multi-instrumentalist Gabe Rhodes (alongside the legendary Hunt Sales and Quinn Vogt-Welch), the album seems perfect for a lazy afternoon. Its aural harmonies of folk, rock and indie are easy on the ear.

The eighteen tracks of the album flow and blend into the other, telling a complex story with very simple words and soulful music. The vocals are solid and provide an effective picture to the artistic intentions of the band. With the tracks Magic and Hide Away, one slips into daydream easily and relaxation is achieved.

LAKES The Agreement (Self-released)

I found Watashi Wa’s Love of Life album to be one of the best of its kind when it was released in 2003. Memorable tunes with the requisite punk energy – it remains one of my favorite albums of all time.

Seth Roberts was the main man in Watashi Wa and Lakes is his latest venture, in the wake of Watashi Wa’s demise. And although the tunes and Roberts’ Sting-channeling vocals are retained, the entire musical approach has been revamped somewhat.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA Zombie EP (Ferret)

When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll – from my perspective, it is all about the final product delivery: the guitar riffs, the drum beats, the ability to inspire the audience to lose control and lose themselves, either through crazy sing-along screamfest sessions or non-stop moshing.

Back in February 2008, I wrote -

Music journalists worldwide are highlighting the current New York music scene as one to watch closely. One of the upcoming bands mentioned is Vampire Weekend. Already, David (Talking Heads) Byrne has endorsed VW. No wonder, as VW’s style incorporates a heady mix of African pop, Western classical music and 80s new wave, which has to be heard to be believed.

Last night’s TAB launch party was filled to the brim with invited guests as we dined on TAB’s wicked food menu (set out buffet style – I particularly enjoyed the ribs) and free flow (for 2 hours, I was a good boy and had three glasses of apple juice). Well, you see, I had to set a good example for Debra and her friend, Cheryl. Or something like that.

AIRPLANE NOISE Getting Down EP (Back to Work)

The sophomore EP of the New Jersey-based indie and powerpop band Airplane Noise, Getting Down is highly interesting. At the first listen, it sounds rather simple and straightforward like the obvious angst in a teenage boy. However like the emotions of an adolescent, it is a lot more complex with the intricate vocal harmonies and the solid drum beats. I found the track Go Ahead to  be fun and catchy which was highly ironic as it lyrics were of a darker theme.

The day started inauspiciously for me, as I slipped and fell on at the wet front area (it was raining the entire morning) of my condo! I was aching the rest of the time and shaking from the shock but thank GOD, there was no major damage…but felt really old…

BAYBEATS 2010

And here we are, on the cusp of another Baybeats! I don’t know about you but I’m really excited about catching all the great bands over the course of this festival. Last time out, my head was too wrapped up with playing with Chris Collingwood that I confess that I missed most of the performances. No such distractions this year, I’m glad to report!

First up, we have the bands who auditioned for the right to play at Baybeats. For me, it’s going to be Basement in My Loft, The Zozi, Meltg Snow, Run Neon Tiger, Postbox and Cockpit that will take pride of place. Then we have the S-ROCK contingent viz. Lunarin, Suchness, Rudra, Typewriter and Celina Foo – all worth checking out.

Around the region, we have the likes of Prema Yin (Malaysia), Carlos Castanos, Camerawalls (Philippines), Santamonica (Indonesia), The Standards (Thailand), King Ly Chee (Hong Kong) and more. Further beyond our shores – Jon Auer of The Posies, David Choi (USA), Handsome Fur (Canada), Mixhell feat. Igor Cavalera of Sepultura (Brazil)…

What a lineup! See what I mean, quite a buffet of indie music, don’t you agree?

For full information about dates and time, go to the Baybeats site.

Don’t forget to patronize the various merch tables to get your souvenirs of what will be a truly memorable rock event! You know the drill, come up and say hi! I’m the guy with the silver hair…

AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB The Golden Age (Merge)

Contrary to popularly-held opinion, I actually thought that San Francisco – AMC’s last album before the recent renaissance – was AMC’s finest effort.
