Singapore band The Zozi play “comedy rock”! Inspired by musical luminaries such as Morrisey to Ramlee Sarip, the Zozi’s upbeat tunes & simple comic-esque lyrics have never ceased to put a smile on many a punter’s face. Infusing a surf punk attitude with neu-bohemia rock, The Zozi have performed their songs about their daily lives at gigs such as Radioclash ‘08 and last year’s DiskoPapan held at Cloth and Clef, Kuala Lumpur. Proving that these live wires are an act not to be missed. Naz provides the answers…

Why make music?

Music is like a dessert of all activities. With more toppings comes good music.

When did you start making music?

2005. When 3.0MP camera phones were popular in the market.

What is the most important thing about making music?

Rhythm. Because without it, your music will go haywire.

Where is your favorite place to make music?

Toilet, beaches, quiet room.

How do you keep making music?

Listening to music of different genres and get inspired. Believing in ourselves and have the strong passion to carry on.

Catch the Zozi at Baybeats 2010: 6.30pm Powerhouse, 22nd August.

I met up with the Zozi on Saturday, just before the Oddies’ performance at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre. Well, just frontman Naz and guitarist Syak, actually. Naturally, Naz did most of the talking being the leader and principal songwriter, and I found him to be a funny, down-to-earth young man with an inventive and ambitious outlook.

What particularly impressed me was that when I asked Naz about the band’s influences, he mentioned S-ROCK bands like Force Vomit, Plainsunset, Bushmen, Boredphucks, Stoned Revivals and the Pinholes, instead of foreign acts! A true 2nd generation S-ROCK band!!

The Zozi was formed around three years ago and have been performing fairly regularly and establishing a bit of a reputation for themselves as a band with a distinctive local flavour. A band that sticks in the memory.

I am looking forward to helping them to map out the next four months in terms of polishing their performance and setlist as well as exploiting the attendant publicity and brouhaha over the Baybeats Festival in the weeks to come. So much potential to work with, the possibilities are exciting indeed.

In the meantime, you can listen to the Zozi at Myspace.

As you are aware I am a Baybeats judge this year, selecting the 8 “new” bands to perform at this year’s festival. What you may not know is that part of a judge’s responsibility is also to mentor 2 bands in the lead-up to the event in August. This year I am indeed honoured and privileged to work with two exciting indie pop-rock bands who are very much after my heart (musical) heart.

*drumroll*

Basement in My Loft is a power trio with a feedback-drenched edge, matching influences of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Joy Division, Blur, Teenage Fanclub et al into a buzzy adrenaline rush. Consisting of Adrian, Zhong Ren and erm Mr Lightning, BIML promises to bring sophisticated noise to the table.

The Zozi are Naz, Syak, Taugay and Afiq, 4 fun-lovin’ boys who describe their music as “comedy rock”! The Zozi is a breath of fresh air in the S-ROCK scene and somewhat of a rarity as a genuine 2nd generation S-ROCK band, citing the likes of Force Vomit and Plainsunset as influences. Certainly their local flavour rings true with yours truly with songs like Coffee at Fullerton and a sonic approach that embraces new wave, post punk, surf and garage.

So watch this space, as I detail my adventures with Basement in My Loft and The Zozi in the next couple of months as all of us collectively prepare for the biggest indie rock festival in Singapore.
