The MTV Movie Awards show is notorious for its outrageousness – as the above picture perfectly illustrates. Obviously aimed at your average American teen, the awards gives you a good indication of what is popular amongst American teens. Thus, infantile gags and the Twilight saga rule (not necessarily mutually exclusive, mind you!). Still, it is a fascinating glimpse as to what currently shapes our popular culture and often it is not a pretty sight!

I am old enough to remember when MTV was not beamed into Singapore households. A dream channel a pop culture-deprived Singaporean individual could only fantasize about. All we had were grainy second or third generation videos of our favorite US or UK bands smuggled in video cassettes from overseas. Then, we would copy these videos and distribute them around to like-minded friends. What a difference almost thirty years makes! Now MTV focuses on reality TV shows, which is not surprising when you consider the amount of music videos floating around the internet nowadays. It’s not the same believe me. This morning I was holed up at the spanking new MTVAsia crib at Lorong Chuan to witness the MTV EMA 2010. Yes, the actual event was held in Madrid last night in the unholy early morning hours but a couple of select bloggers, including Power of Pop (i.e. Melissa Ng and yours truly) were invited to view a preview of the EMA before the telecast this evening.
