Bluesman Joe Bonamassa will be back in Singapore on 17 September at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Power of Pop sent Bonamassa a bunch of questions by email and we set out the responses below.
PoP: You average almost an album a year – what motivates you to be so prolific?
JB: I like to work and I also like to play all styles. It’s that combination that makes it seem that I put out an album every year. But it averages a year to a year and a half between albums.
PoP: Why this continuing love affair with the blues?
JB: It’s the type of music I love and have always found intriguing how a simple forum of music can be played in so many different ways…
PoP: What makes the blues so compelling to you?
JB: The ability to translate how you are feeling through simple chords and a simple song very effectively drives me towards the blues.
PoP: Are the blues still relevant in 2012? Why so?
JB: They are relevant because it has influenced all types of music and still can draw a crowd if it is updated every once in a while.
PoP: What influenced the song choices on Driving Towards the Daylight?
JB: My Producer Kevin Shirley found some real gems, and I wrote a few tunes here and there….I think the song “Driving Toward the Daylight”, “Dislocated Boy” and “Who’s Been Talking” came out great especially.
PoP: This will be your 2nd performance in Singapore – what were your favorite memories from last time out?
JB: I really found Singapore a fantastic place. It is so organized and clean.. Being a New Yorker it was shocking how clean the city was… Its a great place and I’m excited to return.
PoP: What can your fans expect from your performance in September?
JB: We have a whole New Show with a bunch of tunes from the Driving Toward the Daylight album.. It’s a fun gig..
