PoPTV: POWER POP: THE NEXT WAVE

What will be the next rock trend the new kids on the block will cotton on to? Well, in the last five years the post-punk/new wave of the 80s has been fairly squeezed dry by new bands so perhaps now it’s time to move up a decade. If we look at the early 90s, power pop definitely was popular enough for major labels to sign the likes of Weezer, Jellyfish, Teenage FanclubSemisonic, Fastball, Superdrag, The Grays, Wanderlust and the like.

For me, this kind of music – call it pop-rock, rock n’ roll, old skool punk or Britpop, is timeless – as long as the melodies are catchy, the guitars are crunchy, fuzzy or jangly and the drums are pummeling away, I’d label it POWER POP. So… looking forward, what are the current bands that embody these ideals? Here are a list of bands (new and not so new) that to me, fit the bill perfectly.

FUZZY VOX

THE MOONS

THE WHIGS

SHELVES

YUCK

THE GREENHORNES

THE BOLTS

FREE ENERGY

THE SENSIBLES

BE LIKE PABLO

Will 2013 be the year that power pop broke, again? Fingers crossed…

  1. Another great post… And thanks for drawling my attention to some really cool bands. I especially liked The Moons song… Great retro yet modernized piece. My favorite hobby is scouring the Internet for great undiscovered bands… Well undiscovered by the mainstream world I guess. Anyway I’m sure the next great band or new wave is busy banging it out right now in a basement in Iowa or a club in London or a garage in Singamore and has no idea that they are about to ignite the world… Or that I’m scouring the Internet looking for them. Looking forward to your next blog. Keep it up Kevin. Matt (Bittersweet Machines)
