In the coming weeks, 80s alternative rock icons Morrissey, The Stone Roses and The Jesus and Mary Chain will all play in Singapore! What is noteworthy is that it’s not just the older fans who are getting excited by these events but also the young indie rock music lovers as well.

Back in the day of course, Singapore radio would hardly play any music by any of these acts and the general music loving public would hardly have got any rise about concerts featuring any of them. Which is why none of them ever played in Singapore back in the 80s – such an undertaking would most likely have been a loss making venture.┬áDon’t get me wrong – certainly fans of these acts existed in Singapore back then, just not in sufficient numbers to justify organizing gigs.

Fast forward to 2012 and Singapore is now the hot ticket for foreign indie bands! For those of us who followed alternative rock back in the 80s, it seems like we were simply ahead of our time and we had to wait over twenty years for the rest of the country to catch up. Whilst this is in itself a very encouraging development, what needs to happen next is for these foreign indie band loving kids to expand their appreciation to local indie bands as well.

I truly believe that this will happen – just hope it won’t take another twenty years…
