For his latest album, To the Bone, singer-songwriter Steven Wilson was very specific about the type of sound he was trying to achieve viz. 80s progressive pop.
Think of the music produced in the 80s by Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Genesis, Yes and even Tears For Fears, and you will have an idea of this progressive pop that Wilson is attempting to emulating.
From the opening numbers (co-written with XTC’s Andy Partridge) – “To the Bone” and “Nowhere Now” – it is clear that Wilson is committed to his musical concept of choice.
And once one comes to the anthemic “Pariah”, the listener will be swept away by the scope of Wilson’s conceit. It is awesome and breath-taking.
One of the finer albums of 2017.
… still there’s more …
