Mark Mathews is a singer/songwriter from Kent, England who openly admits to be influenced by The Beatles, Small Faces, Paul Weller and Oasis. Certainly, upon listening to his brand new EP – Moments and Movements – there is a germ of truth to this confession. His songs are simply crafted, straightforward and honest. There is an easy vibe about Mathews’ songs that come across as charming and refreshing. However, his songwriting might require strengthening in key areas. Nothing wrong with the performance or production values but the melodies are not exceptional and his rather ordinary non-distinct vocals does not quite help in this department either. As much as I find the overall feel of the music endearing (the country-folk goodness of “Dust Master” and “Thank You”, for example), there is something missing from the execution that holds the material back from true greatness. But for fans of Crowded House, Michael Penn and The Jayhawks, this is definitely good enough for now. Listen to Mark Mathews’ at Soundcloud.
