Just when I thought I might have been spared from yet another lame adaptation of one of the best superhero comic book stories of all time.
Brett Ratner had seriously fucked up the Dark Phoenix saga in X-Men : The Last Stand and when Disney acquired Fox, there was a glimmer of hope that this movie would be shelved so that Kevin Feige could put together a proper MCU Dark Phoenix adaptation. But no such luck.
So what’s the point of Dark Phoenix then? One last hurrah for Fox’s diluted version of the Marvel mutants? Seems like a complete waste of time.
Even more so when you watch this first trailer. Much ado about nothing. How does Jean Grey even become Phoenix? Never mind Dark Phoenix?
The trailer seems to suggest that Jean had these dark powers since childhood and was somehow responsible for the death of her parents?
According to the official synopsis, “Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix”.
Huh? Just like that? No piloting a spaceship through a lethal solar radiation storm? No bargaining with the Phoenix force? No manipulation by Mastermind and the Hellfire Club?
The trailer looks awful, filled with images of Sophie Turner trying to look sinister – she looks constipated instead – and a whole bunch of depressed X-Men!
I know it’s only a trailer but even without the fact of the Disney-Fox acquisition looming in the background, it appears that writer-director Simon Kinberg has a lame duck superhero disaster on his hands.
