South African-Canadian film director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) is going experimental with his work by forming Oats Studios to showcase his new film projects.
Blomkamp is hopeful that these projects will be developed into full-length features through crowdfunding. The first short film to be released is Rakka, which you can watch below.
Rakka is Blomkamp’s singular vision of the scifi trope – the alien invasion. Nothing new, of course, but it’s a grim and gritty approach that will be familiar to fans of District 9.
In addition, it’s Blomkamp’s attempt to escape from the Hollywood mentality of reboots and sequels that is currently cluttering the scifi film landscape, by proposing new original material.
