As geek franchise movies devolve further and deeper into formulaic cash-grabs, it is left to the scifi adaptation to provide us geeks with edgy, artistic material to savour and meditate on.
One such adaptation is the Alex (Ex Machina) Garland-helmed Annihilation, from Eric VanderMeer’s 2014 novel of the same name, which concerns a team of four women (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) who set out into an area known as Area X.
The area is an environmental disaster zone, abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization. They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma.
Starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny (the movie has five in the team) and Oscar Issacs; the movie is – based on the official trailer – more of a straightforward scifi horror flick than the novel.
Annihilation hits cinema in February 2018.
… still there’s more …
