Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Remember when Prometheus was first announced and director Ridley Scott swearing to high heaven that it was NOT an Alien prequel? Well, Scott has finally dropped the facade and has even gone further to declare that the Prometheus sequel (viz. Alien: Covenant) is now officially part of the Alien franchise and will be the first instalment of a prequel trilogy!
Seriously? Didn’t Hollywood learn any lessons from the Star Wars prequels and The Hobbit? Guess Fox has convinced Scott on the financial rewards of re-branding his Prometheus storyline and tying them closely with the Alien franchise.
While deeply flawed, there were positives in Prometheus but now with this upcoming trilogy leading ultimately to the first Alien movie, there is so much potential for Scott to royally fuck up the Alien franchise, after the utterly risible Alien vs Predator movies did it no favours.
Much will depend on how Scott sets up everything in Alien: Covenant. Keep your fingers crossed.
Release date: May 2017.
