It seldom gets as meta as it did in the 4-part Airboy series recently published by Image Comics, written by Jame Robinson and illustrated by Greg Hinkle.
Basically, Robinson and Hinkle are hired by Image Comics to reboot WWII hero Airboy for the millennial generation. Instead, the mini-series is about Robinson and Hinkle meeting Airboy (!) being transported into WWII and actually participating in an Airboy mission.
That in itself, would have been something to behold but the series goes further. This is where the tone of the comic becomes decidedly adult as Robinson and Hinkle get high on drugs, pick up whores to fuck jointly, share their junk with the world and generally, reflect upon their lives in oh too personal confessional segments. Yes all this with Airboy and his cohorts in for the ride. I mean the scene where Hinkle is fucking Valkyrie is something else!
Not your standard ‘run-of-the-mill’ reboot for Robinson and Hinkle, no sir! Naturally, the series had its fair share of controversy – especially in how transgenders were portrayed (millennials are shockingly PC) – but as a work of art, Airboy is definitely one of the most unique comic books of the year.
