2017 was a very eventful year for geek movies in general. Geek franchises like the MCU and Star Wars demonstrated their wide-ranging popularity with the masses whilst (sometimes) dumbing down story content in the process.
The year began strongly enough with intelligent films in Arrival (a 2016 movie only screened in Singapore this year) and Logan – Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine – being the absolute high point of 2017.
Other standouts included Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Wonder Woman, War for the Planet of the Apes, Spider-Man : Homecoming, It and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
These ‘genre’ films proved once again that strong plots, emotional connections and a healthy respect for world-building result in resonant human stories, within the context of fantastical settings.
However, the tail end of the year featured films that somewhat lost their way, in our humble opinion.
Alien : Covenant, Blade Runner 2049, Thor : Ragnarok, Justice League and Star Wars : The Last Jedi never quite rose up to their attendant hype and expectations.
2018 is upon us and we begin another Geek Out!!! journey with Del Toro’s The Shape of Water in January. Do come along for the ride!
… still there’s more …
