Reviews of EPs/albums that have been released in 2016. Time to discover new music!
THE HANNAS – THE BEND (SELF-RELEASED)
This 4-track EP is a simple proposition – power pop forms with the slap-dash attitude of classicist punk bands from The Ramones to Weezer to Green Day. But The Hannas are no one-trick ponies, with enough diversity amongst the songs to demonstrate the band’s inherent musicality. https://www.facebook.com/thehannasmusicnow/
SUMNER – THAT LADYBIRD SUMMER (CHURCHTOWN RECORDS)
PoP visitors will know that we simple adore music like this. Retro-pop that evokes a special music epoch without slavishly re-creation but utilising the styles, references and influence to inspire a fresh post-modern approach. So yes, it’s easy to spot The Beatles, The Kinks, The Idle Race, The Move, Traffic and Pink Floyd in Sumner’s psychedelic-tinged chamber pop agenda but this is a strength not a weakness, and in the context of modern pop music, so very unique! Highly recommended!!
JOHN PAPA GROS – RIVER’S ON FIRE (FUNKY KREWE RECORDS)
Good old fashioned New Orleans funk ’n’ roll from John Papa Gros, noted singer-songwriter-musican, that is going to please the rock ’n’ roll purists out there. Thus, expect a meaty beaty sound that is reminiscent of Dr. John, The Meters, Randy Newman and of course, Allen Toussaint. Authentic feel good music! http://www.johnpapagros.com/

GABRIEL COLLINS – COUNT THE SECONDS (SELF-RELEASED)
Sophisticated singer-songwriter fare that deserves the attention of discerning music lovers. Almost as if coming through a time warp, Collins’ music recalls 70s craftsmen like Tom Waits, David Bowie, John Martyn et al, coupled with a keen appreciated for art music (John Cage, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Kamen etc). http://gabrielcollinsmusic.com/
